And then he said 'Is lady of the house there'?

The other day, I answered a landline (am I the only unicorn that still has one?).  One of those random numbers we never answer anymore - out of curiosity.  

It never disappoints.

The line is either quiet when the automated dialer wasn't quick enough to connect with whomever wherever. Or, a robot starts with “oh-so-natural-voice” about your auto insurance/warranty, Google search engine, or warning about that outstanding warrant for your arrest unless you do XYZ. I once got a person reading the script so well I thought it was a recording.

This time, a friendly voice, excited that someone actually answered, said, “Is lady of the house there?”  He lost me right there.

 

What does it even mean?

Why, because women are more compassionate, therefore generous, open to charity, or fundraising when you play the emotions right?  Deep down, it just brought back all those cheap pickup lines I heard over the years. You know, those that never work?!

I don’t blame telemarketers. Cold calling people at all times of the day is rough. Being hung up on at best, or cursed off - at worst. But SOMEONE believed it was a good idea to give them THIS script to try on everybody. It wasn’t the first time I heard this "opening line" either.

But some salespeople believe that using similar sales tactics or scripts is helping them overcome sales anxiety and sell more. Even on the road, facing clients directly. You and I both know that's not the case. Plus the image of your company is at stake.

The question is: how do you want your clients to feel when dealing with your sales reps? 

 

 

How do you know selling scripts are useless?

I bet you experienced someone using it on YOU at least once.  Am I right?

You instantly knew it wasn’t natural - that’s not how “normal” people ever speak. The result? You suspected double meaning in every word.

It felt like you spoke with a robot instead of a human being.

You felt like you’re being taken for a ride.

Assumed to be just like everybody else.  

Yuck, it felt yucky.

It felt like being manipulated.

Yet so many selling experts and gurus are offering another bulletproof, ultimate, fail-proof sales script that will miraculously help you close EVERY deal.  Heck, I offer my own Reverse Strategy for Success Method.

Except – RSTS is NOT about selling scripts, or using questions that program the client to answer YES, YES, YES until it’s engraved into their brain – so that at the end she can’t possibly say no….

My method is the exact opposite of those tricky tips. I created and polished my own RSTS when I was on the road, selling face to face, and seeing my competitors insulting client’s intelligence with these sleazy tactics. In their arrogance, they thought they were killing it. I saw clients cringe. 

I never wanted to be seen as a part of that club.

I craved integrity. I had higher personal standards. By doing the exact opposite I easily beat them at their own game. Therefore I never felt awful selling. I never felt devastated when someone said no, not today, either. The whole principle of my RSTS is that you do 80% of your work BEFORE you even speak to a client. And when it comes to “sales conversation”, it’s as easy and natural as a friendly chat because

  • You already know what they really want and need
  • You already know what fits their needs perfectly
  • You already have a friendly relationship 
  • You know what they truly care about deep down (they told you)
  • You're offering them what they TOLD you they want to buy

Following the 5 steps of my RSTS, you're not pushing what you need to sell.

You're offering what they already told you they like to buy.

 

 

I came up with my own Reverse Strategy to Success because I couldn’t stomach to make someone feel like they’re being sold to. I despise being treated like that myself. I believe most of us do.

Witnessing those tactics in the field – didn’t make me decide I’m not cut out for sales.

 

I was determined to be different, to do better.

It drove me to find my own authentic way that was the opposite of what I kept seeing. And when I started leaving all those other salespeople behind, I knew I was on to something!

If you’re a female entrepreneur I know you can relate. We’re extra sensitive to this. Especially when it comes to products such as wine that you (or someone you care about) poured your heart and soul into growing, nurturing, creating, perfecting - and hold it in high regards.   

 

So what to do when your sales aren't up to your standards?

You reached for help and what you see out there doesn’t feel right. What you found feels like another one of those hyper hacks that might work for online sales but not in your field. You don't need more theory, more information. You're on information overload already. The solution is the answer, one that applies to you and your business.

Especially now, when we’ve limited options in the market  - and getting collective internet/ ZOOM fatigue. It's time to be creative.

 

 

Today's Google is full of “sales experts” but does what they do apply to your industry, products, or a specific type of clients you deal with? I see people who’re all about ROI, SEO, and marketing and know all the theory but was it actually tested in the market? 

Isn't it easier to work and brainstorm with someone who excelled in the exact industry you’re in, dealing with those same exact issues you’re dealing with? So she could relate and understand the nuances and frustrations that only come with navigating the testosterone-filled market? 

Often, when you hit the plateau or the results aren't where you would like them to be, it's frustrating not to see what the real issue is.  It's costly and time-consuming figuring out what works and what doesn't. Would you nail yoga faster with a hot instructor standing behind you, making sure you do that downward dog pose right, so you don't hurt yourself?
