Strong After 60: The Confidence Muscle Nobody Talks About
What happens when a woman who once had only 19 cents in her bank account decides that her story will not end there?
In this deeply personal episode of Third Chances, I sit down with fitness expert, author, and former Clemson University scholarship swimmer Marian Harris, a woman whose strength was forged through far more than exercise.
Marian spent years describing herself as a people pleaser, holding on to an abusive marriage and believing that if she loved enough, gave enough, and tried hard enough, things might change.
Leaving required courage. But healing presented an even harder challenge: forgiving her abuser and eventually learning to forgive herself for staying.
With faith, gratitude, physical movement, and a willingness to begin again, Marian rebuilt her confidence and her life. Today, she helps women in midlife and beyond discover that strength is not only about what the body can do. It is also about what we survive, what we release, and how we choose to move forward.
Her book, The 19 Cent Millionaire, reflects the journey that took her from rock bottom to a life devoted to helping other women become stronger, more resilient, and more confident especially after 60.
In this conversation, we explore:
- Why a few good moments can keep us in a painful relationship far longer than we should stay
- What it took for Marian to finally leave her abusive marriage
- The difficult process of forgiving both her abuser and herself
- How faith and gratitude helped her rebuild her life
- The powerful connection between physical strength and mental resilience
- Why movement becomes even more important as women age
- What women over 60 need to stop believing about their bodies and their possibilities
- How to begin again when life has left you with almost nothing
This episode is for the woman who has spent years putting everyone else first. The woman rebuilding after heartbreak, hardship, or loss. And the woman who may be wondering whether it is too late to become strong, confident, and excited about her life again.
Marian’s story is a reminder that starting over does not erase what happened but it can change what happens next.
